Rebels became associated with the school because it was on the 'South' side of the city --- southerners; rebels. More branding terminology than branded mascot.

Also, don't recall rebels ever mentioned in school fight song --- but think Knights were but wouldn't bet on it as I don't remember all of the song. Probably had some rebel cheers which causes even more confusion.

Also I remember teams being referred to as the Golden Knights of South Hills Catholic and also the South Hills Catholic Rebels.

So much for helping.Ralph Stalterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11672664666040578656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34452621.post-89447262121839258292008-07-30T17:19:00.000-04:002008-07-30T17:19:00.000-04:00I wonder who first made the association of the wor...I wonder who first made the association of the word South (in SHC) with the rebels of the southern states. Did it come from the athletes, a coach, a history teacher or a couple of students BS-ing (brain-storming...right?) over lunch?

I, for one, loved the imagery and preferred it over the Golden Knights. (Though, thinking back, I remember actually liking the duality represented by the two competing symbols.) The rebel flag was definitely a great prop for pep rallys and waving from car windows on the way to games.

I'm glad it came up before the era of the hyper-sensitive, politically correct mind-set came along and we lost our collective sense of perspective (and humor) in regard to mascots and other symbols.Dan Walshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06362313153115604161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34452621.post-11651831032590292682008-07-30T15:22:00.000-04:002008-07-30T15:22:00.000-04:00Amy Ganser, of the SLSHS Alumni Office had to do s...Amy Ganser, of the SLSHS Alumni Office had to do some reading in the yearbooks from the early years. "It seems that although the athletic teams in 1960, 1961 and 1962 were originally the Golden Knights, in 1963 ‘Knights’ and ‘Rebels’ began to be used interchangeably. By the 1966 and 1967 yearbooks, other than the name of the yearbook, the word Knight was no longer used. I did not see any explanation of the change written up in any of the yearbooks, but it seems that the class of 66 was the year that made a point to emphasize the use of Rebels as the team name and mascot."Ralph Stalterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11672664666040578656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34452621.post-1160395465275059522006-10-09T08:04:00.000-04:002006-10-09T08:04:00.000-04:00To all: I echo Kevin's sentiments. Thanks again to Mike for hosting a great time on Saturday and all who made the weekend possible and to Ralph and BH for the emails over the past year that got the ball rolling.

John WoltzRalph Stalterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11672664666040578656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34452621.post-1160395339757586732006-10-09T08:02:00.000-04:002006-10-09T08:02:00.000-04:00Hey Guys,I just got back home and now, after havin...Hey Guys,

I just got back home and now, after having read everyone’s comments on this weekend, I feel compelled to make some of my own.

We are reminded after this event that we are really blessed in so many ways. I truly believe that in life we are not measured by our accomplishments, or how much money we have, but how we are as a person and the family and friends we have. I feel blessed to be associated with each and every one of you and will always consider this past weekend one that transcends all others.

All of our parents sacrificed so that we could enjoy the special High School experience that was South Catholic. Our lives, hearts, and souls were enriched by it. What a gift we were given!!

Being with all of you this weekend made me remember that gift, and that I shared my high school years with some of the best persons on this planet.

Friends always,

Tom
Thomas F. I know I'll never get tired of a classmate saying "do you remember...". I also want to repeat thanks to Ralph, Bill, and Mike. Mike, I've never been so proud of being a native of OverCarrickbrook.

What a treat to see the Vince, formerly known as Brother. It was so nice to see and be with you. Thanks to Ralph, Bill, and Mike for all that you did.

When I was At South, I loved the whole experience and this weekend brought back so many great, happy, and important times and memories for me. It was most rewarding to realize that you all had the same feelings toward South as so many of the teachers and Brothers had toward you. We all thought and still think that it was Camelot.
Thanks for being such a great group and for the wonderful time this weekend.

Looking forward to pictures and to continuing a great tradition.

Best of everything to you.

Vince WaltersRalph Stalterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11672664666040578656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34452621.post-1160394934694920102006-10-09T07:55:00.000-04:002006-10-09T07:55:00.000-04:00Kevin, You said it well and I'm sure for all of us...Kevin, You said it well and I'm sure for all of us. Ralph, Bill and Mike, thanks for all you did to put the weekend together.

I have to say, I'm not usually one to do a lot of standning around and simply talking, but Saturday the time went by too fast. It's amazing to think that I talked more to some of you all than I did in four years of high school.

In the intevening years it seems we've all grown in some measure of wisdom, and it seems that the good Christian brothers, along with the Bukas, Whites, Strazza'a, Sparvero's, etc. all must have done
some pretty good work. It was unbelievable and unforgetable. I had one of the best times I have ever had and all of you are really terrific. Thanks for being who you are. We joke around a lot but I mean that.

Ralph, what can I say that hasn't been said. Your the best and thanks so much for what you have done. Your persistance and leadership in this was and is fantastic. You the man Ralph!!! I nominate you as President of our alumni class of 68'. I know I speak for all when I say all in favor--Its unanimous. The job is yours and we will support you in all ways possible.

Bill, thanks so much for the tickets to the game on Friday night. That was great and its much appreciated. It was a real honor for me to be able to participate with my old classmates. I am hopeful that we can roundup many of those in the class for our next event. Additionally, as Larry Aber mentioned, I would like to see us do something meaningful as a class.

It was also great to see the various and diverse roads that we have all taken, yet all very meaningful. In any case, everyone has taken good care of their families, contributed to society, and represent a wonderful group of people. Thank you, Ralph.

By the way, Coleman, Sylvester, Mickey W, et al, I hope you have a good excuse.

God Bless.

Tony Lacenere
_____________________________
Anthony M.
